The fast food chain’s fried chicken recipe has been a favorite among many over the years, and now vegetarians will be able to get in on the action!
The company announced this week that it was testing a chicken-like vegetarian option in the UK.
So far the chickenless chicken recipe is being kept under wraps, but you can be assured that even though the chicken is gone, KFC’s beloved signature blend of 11 different herbs and spices will still be included in the recipe!
A spokesperson for KFC told the New York Times QUOTE, “Development of the recipe is still in its very early stages, and so the options we’re exploring in our kitchen are still top secret”.
He went on to say, “Once we’ve perfected the recipe, we aim to test with customers this year, and if all goes well, we hope to launch a new vegetarian option in 2019.”
The company said a vegetarian menu item could be officially launched as early as next year in the United Kingdom and Ireland. However, US customers may have to wait longer.
Of course people on twitter have some strong opinions about this faux fried chicken announcement.
@johnlegere on twitter simply wrote, “ABOMINATION”
While @ahmed tweeted, “KFC in early stages of developing vegetarian fried chicken recipe. Colonel Sanders is turning in his grave”.
But what do vegetarians think? Well don’t be alarmed but they have some pretty strong opinions too!
@jkayla618 tweeted, “don’t bother. no self-respecting vegetarian would eat at KFC.”
According to USAToday, The new menu item isn’t necessarily to appease animal-rights activists. Rather, the vegetarian option is part of a plan to reduce calories by 20% per serving by 2025.
Other statistics show that vegetarianism has increased by double and triple digits in the US alone, so it only makes sense for fast food chains to take note and switch up their menu offerings!

  1. The lengths some people go to to make fun of vegetarians and vegans ._. Just because some people choose not to eat meat, doesn't mean some of them don't like the TASTE of it.

  2. 1:46 why does she read it out in such a shaming voice? Is it really that weird that a vegetarian wouldn't want to eat in a place that's based on chicken? By buying the vegetarian "chicken", you support the KFC company that is involved in the meat industry… As a vegetarian, I usually don't like to eat in meat fast food places for this reason, but I think that as there are more vegetarian options it might change… I know some companies donate some of the money, which is amazing.

  3. More and more people are turning into vegetarians, they have probably spotted a huge gap and profit in the market that they want to dig in to. It gets expensive raising all them growth injected modified chickens you know, plus vegetarians don't have much choice when going to major fast food chains. As long as it's not cooked in the same oil, I think this can be permanent.

  4. It needs to be vegan and cooked in separate oil for this to be a real success. All the vegetarians on here complaining don’t realise this is a huge step in getting it more mainstream especially for those converting from a meat a diet.

  5. Wow, okay, options for people who are choosing to not eat meat but not gluten free options for people who literally can't eat there because celiac disease is a thing which isn't a choice

  6. i dont understand why theres so much backlash from both sides. why tf are vegetarians complaining? and for everyone else, its not like theyre replacing the chicken with this, its just an addition. a lot of vegetarian chicken tastes sooo much like the animal, dont get why people are so attached to making sure their food comes from a dead animal and has many calories opposed to just having another option, not involving all the calories and suffering of animals
